Prepositional Poems

"Airplane" by Zelda

On an airplane,
above the ground
looking out the window.

On an airplane,
in the clouds,
then you see something.

On an airplane,
getting higher and higher,
with flying ducks, horses,
pigs, and more.

On an airplane,
coming down,
with flying dogs, cats,
and mice.

On an airplane,
amazed, landing,
When you wake up,
It was only a dream.

"Rocks" by Aubrie

Atop the rocks
as the water flows
down the river it goes

Atop the rocks
as the fish will swim
down the river they go

Atop the rocks
I can reach the trees
as the water and the fish
go on, and on, and on.

"A Bouncy Ball" by Noah

In the mall
Down the hall
And in the toy store
A kid ran by
I heard a cry
And ask, "What's wrong?"
He said, "Bouncy ball"
I looked down the hall
And guess what I saw
A bouncy ball

Inspired Poets

"Rough Days" by Jackeline and Zelda

Rough days are
as stinky as a skunk
Rough days are as tough
as fighting a dragon
Rough days are exhausting
as staying up late
Rough days are as hard
as bumping your head
Rough days are a
s rotten as rotten carrots

"Rough Days" by Zelda and Jackeline

Rough days are as stinky as a skunk
Rough days are as rotten as a bad carrot

Rough days are as tough as fighting a dragon
Rough days are as hard as a table

Rough days are as exhausting as staying up late!

Midnight Snack by Nova and Her Mom
(Thank you for sharing your poem with us!)

The stars are as bright
as your smile.
I'd like to gnaw on them for a while.

The night sky is black
as an empty iron pot.

I wonder if that star is hot.

The moon is a

big ball of cheese.

I could take a bite if I please.

A feast of crickets
disturbs the quiet.
I shut my eyes and chirp to try it.

A milky shooting star
streaks by to the south.
Can I catch a meteor in my mouth?

"P.O.E.M.S." by Bryan

Play around with words
Other voices
Expression and feeling
Making and imagining
Super fun and funny sometimes

"Car Trip" by Sam

In the car on the street
Rain is pouring
Birds are soaring
to their home
Now the car is breaking down
Rain is plopping
Birds are soaring
to their home
Make it stop
Make it stop
What a day!

"The Plane" by Sam

We start moving faster, faster
Then we shoot into the air
My ears are popping
Get me out of here!

"Scary Bedroom" by Jackeline

It was at night
I was in my bedroom
Then I saw a bear
It was moving
And the lights were off

"Emotions" by Trinity

In an ocean there were mermaids

one of them was sad
and the other was mad

So they were murmuring

how sad and mad
they were to their dad

Their dad was mad and sad

that they were telling him
about how mad and sad
they were

So then their mom was

relaxing and watching the clouds
but somehow it got loud

The mom mermaid said

to herself that if
they are sad and mad
She feels bad for them

"Night Sky" by Nova

Near Earth

Interesting
Gorgeous
High
Tall
Stars
Kind of mysterious
Yellow stars

"Space Odyssey" by Nova and Maria

The wind howls

like a deep blue sea
Far from earth
in a galaxy

A galaxy close to Mars

but still so far
It's like a dream come true
looking at stars

One little step for Earth

one big step for man
You see the Earth
as I can

Looking up feeling

so small I know
One day I'll be
really tall

"Island" by Nova

The birds above me

caw very loud

I cover my ears

over the clouds

I see whales in

the sea across the island

They must be some

sort of family

Animal Poems

"The Kick" by Brendan

In the forest I stand alone
Looking for my beautiful home
Here comes a deer looking about
I stand there I won't shout
Inside the forest on the ground
I yell, "Man down! Man down!
Kicked in the face by a deer!"
Oh, wait. No one's here.

"Owls" by Dina

Above in the sky
I see you fly
At night I wish
I could be one of you
Owls, owls staying up all night
Owls, owls sleeping in the day
I miss all the fun
The night is done
I'm sorry to say this poem
Needs to end right away

"Ocean Wonder" by Ethan

Up above flying fish fly
Sharks are swimming below
On the ground mussels eating alone
There was something on my leg
Uh-oh!

"The Fly" by Ivan

I stand on 55th Street
I look up high
And from down below
I see a fly fly away
I follow the fly
Down the street
After that,
It attacks me
Good grief!

"Red Panda Bear" by Kennedy

Red panda bear
Red panda bear
I look up from where I am now
I look all the way up from the ground
I see you climb high up in the trees
I see you climb away from me
Don't be scared
Don't go away
I want you to stay

"The Flying Fish" by Kennedy and Nova

Flying wet,
Swimming high,
Up far in the beautiful sky
Never seen
Soon will be
In the water next to me
The flying fish

"Underwater Animals" by Milo

Under water there's a party
With water animals about
Dancing, singing, and playing
As they are listening
Under water, under water
As they go
Look at them dancing
Prancing and moving

Color Poems

The color poem begins with a metaphor that gives a feeling about the color according to the poet. The next three lines are similes that give examples or supporting details about the first line. Some poets were so inspired, they added more lines!

Brown is elaboration
like pages in an old book
like bark on trees
as brown as soil

By Aubrie

Blue is fun
like playing video games 24 hours straight
like jumping off a 40-ft cliff
as awesome as eating hot pie on a cold day

By Brendan

Blue is sadness
like a cub lost from its mother
like a seal lost at sea
like a person's heart broken after a breakup

By Bryan

Purple is royal
like lavender in bloom
like my peacock shirt
as royal as a king and queen in court

By Dina

Green is earth
like a leaf sprouting out
like a big green tree
like people cleaning and being green
as beautiful as flowers
as bright as the sun
like a green grasshopper
like a green chameleon

By Ethan

Green is fun
like the pool in my backyard
like the mint ice cream in my freezer
green are the leaves on the big oak tree

By Ivan

Yellow is sweet
like yummy honey
like the smile on the sun
like the element of balance
yellow is the sweetness of every rainy day

By Joey

Brown is chocolate
like a deer blended in the trees
like a tree's bark with a woodpecker looking for ants
like a leaf that fell off a tree which is dry
as cold as a hippo in a mud wallow

By Johnnie

Turquoise is relaxation
like ocean water in the morning
like basking in the sun at the pool
as comforting as a good book and a blanket

By Kennedy

Brown is gross
like mud on your clothes
like spilling gravy on your pants
as gross as falling in mud

Black is spooky
like the monsters under your bed
like walking in the woods at night
as spooky as the night!

By Maria

Blue is cold
like the ice
like the cold water in my glass
as cold as snow and winter

By Noah

Blue is cool
like the water
like a book
like a pencil sharpener

By Romel

Yellow is exciting!
like getting a package in the mail
like a roller coaster
like a happy day, with nothing wrong

By Sam

Pink is excitement
like kids running up and down
like children getting new clothes
like teachers getting paid
as exciting as getting my new pink shoes

By Trinity

Brown is persistence
like making mud pie
like digging a hole
as much work as knitting a sweater

By Zelda Myers

Use of Similes and Metaphors in Poetry

"Two Ears, One Mouth" by Maria and Kennedy

Listening is a prize
So look inside
It'll make you wise.

One mouth is sweet
Listening is a treat.

Your mouth is a waterfall
So don't let it leak
Your mouth is a beak

Tweet, tweet, tweet.

"Snakes" by Noah

The python was as hungry as a cow
The snake could eat a cow
The cobra was like a lion
The cobra is as scary as a devil
The snake is as slimy as a worm

"My Dog" by Joey

Her fur is as black as coal
When I touch her fur it is soft like silk
She is sweet and lazy
Her heart is as pure as gold
She is a beautiful dog
She is Millie

"The Moon and the Sun" by Kathleen and Jeshua

The moon and the sun
are as round as a clock.

The sun is the moon
when the day is dark

The moon is as bumpy
as a bumpy road.

The sun is a bright
light bulb.

The sun and the moon
tell time to whom?

"The Golden Dog" by Brendan

Shinier than the brightest light
But guess what - she won't bite!
As wise as the wisest man or woman
Doesn't jump on tables for food
Because if she did, that would be rude
She is even golder than gold
Cute like a toddler
In bed at night
As fast as lightning
Through the night
She is my dog...
Goodbye
